Prabowo Allocates Rp 4 Trillion to Repair 1,800 Railway Crossings
President Prabowo Subianto is set to repair 1,800 railway crossing points on Java Island, allocating around Rp 4 trillion to improve public transportation safety.
“We estimate around nearly Rp 4 trillion, for safety,” said Prabowo during a visit to victims of a train accident at RSUD dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid in Bekasi City on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
The President explained that the government is taking this step because many railway crossings currently lack guards, making them prone to accidents. This is because thousands of these crossing points are inherited infrastructure from the Dutch era, which have not received comprehensive maintenance for decades.
Therefore, Prabowo has instructed his subordinates to immediately address the issue using two handling schemes: building guard posts or constructing flyovers.
“I will order that we immediately repair all those crossings, whether by setting up guard posts or flyovers; the implementation will be assigned accordingly,” he stated.
Specifically for the Bekasi area, the President has approved the construction of a flyover through a presidential aid scheme, due to the urgent traffic density conditions.
The Bekasi Regional Government had previously proposed building thousands of metres of flyover to minimise accident risks at vulnerable points.
The President emphasised that the substantial budget must be disbursed now, given the importance of trains as a mass transportation mode for the public.
This handling is targeted to resolve safety issues at level crossings that have been neglected for nearly 80 years since independence. (Ant)
