Prabowo Aims for Indonesia to Achieve Meat Self-Sufficiency within Four Years
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto targets Indonesia to achieve meat self-sufficiency in the next four years. He articulated the target while attending a shrimp harvest at Kebumen’s fish ponds in Central Java. Prabowo acknowledged that meat remains one of the food commodities that has not yet achieved self-sufficiency because it is still supplied from abroad. “Our meat is not yet self-sufficient. This is being worked on; perhaps in four years, five years, we will be self-sufficient in meat, yes,” Prabowo said on Saturday, 23 May 2026. Rice and corn as sources of carbohydrates, for instance, are already self-sufficient. The stocks of both are even said to be in surplus. Protein sources such as eggs and broiler chickens have also achieved self-sufficiency. “Our food supply is relatively safe,” Prabowo added. The government has established 11 strategic food commodities as essential needs for public consumption. These commodities include rice, big red chili, bird’s eye chili, corn, chicken meat, eggs, shallots, garlic, soybeans, beef or buffalo meat, and household sugar. The three commodities are shallots, soybeans, and beef or buffalo meat. “This is what we call the foods that have consensus among us. Jengkol is also a staple, but the government guards the 11; that’s why we are now self-sufficient,” Amran commented when met at his residence on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.
