Prabowo Aims for Indonesia to Achieve Meat Self-Sufficiency Soon
Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto is targeting meat self-sufficiency in the coming years. ‘This is being worked on; perhaps in four years, in five years we will have meat self-sufficiency,’ Prabowo said in Kebumen, Central Java, on Saturday, 23 May 2026, quoted from the YouTube channel of the Presidential Secretariat. The government is currently preparing a range of strategic steps to realise the meat self-sufficiency target soon. Overall, Prabowo assured that the domestic food situation remains secure. Although meat self-sufficiency has not yet been achieved, Indonesia has already achieved self-sufficiency in rice and maize. ‘Praise be to God, there is much we have achieved. We are now food self-sufficient. We are self-sufficient in rice, maize. Then our protein, eggs, poultry, and meat we have not yet achieved,’ he said. On this occasion, Prabowo highlighted global geopolitical volatility and the war situations in various countries. Prabowo said he is grateful Indonesia is not involved in war, but he reminded to be vigilant. ‘We are grateful to the Almighty, we are not involved. But we must be vigilant,’ he said. The head of state emphasised that Indonesia must have a strong national power, including in defence, to safeguard the management of natural resources. He urged that national wealth must be safeguarded from various foreign interests. ‘We must have strength. That’s why we are building our defence strength to safeguard our wealth,’ he said.
