President Prabowo Subianto inspected a shrimp harvest at the Kebumen-based Regional Aquaculture Farm in Central Java on Saturday, 23 May 2026. The President observed the shrimp harvesting process firsthand and joined in pulling nets brimming with catch alongside Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan and Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono. The government has positioned the shrimp harvest as part of efforts to strengthen national protein self-sufficiency. In addition to developing a shrimp estate in Kebumen to boost community protein sources and open export opportunities, President Prabowo is also pushing for the construction of shrimp farms in Waingapu covering 2,000 hectares and Gorontalo spanning 200 hectares. Furthermore, the government plans to develop fish farms in West Java’s North Coast region, spanning 14,000 hectares. The government stated that shrimp harvested from Kebumen will first be directed to meet domestic needs, as part of strengthening national protein self-sufficiency. The shrimp farm in Tegal Retno Village, Kebumen, covers approximately 65 hectares with 206 pond units. The area is managed by a Public Service Agency (BLU) under the Directorate General of Aquaculture of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The aquaculture area was built around three years ago and involves local communities in daily operations. The farm’s production value is estimated at Rp 67.2 billion per cycle, or approximately Rp 134.4 billion annually. The project is also expected to employ around 650 local workers. The government stated that following self-sufficiency achievements in rice, corn, eggs, chicken, and fish, shrimp and fish farm development is now focused on strengthening national protein self-sufficiency. The programme is also expected to support improvements in human resource quality, workforce productivity, children’s intelligence, and accelerate the reduction of stunting in Indonesia.
