PPP congress

PPP congress

The United Development Party (PPP) is holding a congress from
Aug. 29 to 31, 1994 in Jakarta. This is an important event
because PPP, PDI (Indonesian Democratic Party) and the Functional
Group (Golkar) are national assets. They all strive for
enhancement of the people's intellect and improvement of people's
welfare.

If PPP is to respond positively to the Message of the People's
Suffering, during this congress it should work on and design a
plan towards improving the people's welfare during the next five
years. But, as we all know, days before the congress the central
issue was who the candidate for the Chairman of the party would
be. Four factions of the party--NU (Nahdlatul Ulama), Muslimin
Indonesia, Syarikat Islam and Perti--were striving for the
prestigious seat of Party Chairman.

PPP is hoped to mature enough to maintain harmony among the
party's elements and that it is able to solve rising problems
without interference from the government.

As a party which reflects Islamic values and has Moslems as
its strong nucleus, PPP is hoped to be able to play a greater and
more important role in the next five-year period. At least it
should solidify its political structure.

As a channel of the people's aspirations, it is high time PPP
played a more active and concrete role. Not to engage in empty
talks, but not to keep silent either.
