PPP Chairman Mardiono Proposes 2 or 3 Percent Parliamentary Threshold

United Development Party (PPP) Chairman Muhamad Mardiono has proposed a parliamentary threshold of two or three percent. He made the statement while inaugurating the PPP Regional Executive Board for West Nusa Tenggara in Mataram. “Because we want to build a transparent and accountable democracy, in my view it should be lowered from four percent, whether to three percent or two percent,” Mardiono told reporters. He was responding to the discourse on raising the parliamentary threshold to seven percent in the revision of the Election Law. Mardiono deemed a zero percent threshold impossible, arguing it would lead to thousands of parties emerging. He stressed that whatever threshold is decided, PPP is ready, having participated in 11 elections since 1973 under various systems. He also emphasized that the threshold must reflect the principle of democratic justice, ensuring democracy is not monopolized by certain groups. The NasDem Party has proposed a seven percent threshold, while the Golkar Party has proposed five percent in the ongoing discussions on the Election Law revision.
