PPL Rehabilitates Mangroves to Restore Coastal Ecosystem

PT Pertamina Port & Logistics (PPL) has rehabilitated 600 mangroves in the Tanjung Batu Shorebase area, Balikpapan, as an effort to strengthen the coastal ecosystem. The programme aims to reduce the risk of abrasion while supporting environmental recovery in coastal areas.

The mangrove rehabilitation began with site mapping, identification of land conditions, and selection of mangrove species suited to the local environmental characteristics. These steps were taken to increase the success rate of the planting.

In its implementation, the rehabilitation method was adapted to the conditions of each coastal zone. In areas experiencing abrasion, the programme was complemented with conservation activities and monitoring of mangrove seedling growth to support the ecosystem recovery process.

PT Pertamina Port & Logistics Director Muhammad Akbar Thaib said the mangrove rehabilitation is an effort to preserve the environment around the company’s operational areas. “This mangrove planting is a form of our commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability in the Tanjung Batu Shorebase area. In addition to helping reduce the risk of abrasion and supporting greening, we hope the presence of mangroves can provide benefits for the coastal ecosystem as well as the surrounding flora and fauna,” Akbar said in a written statement on Tuesday.

The company expects the mangrove rehabilitation to enhance the protection of coastal areas from abrasion, maintain biodiversity, and provide benefits for communities around its operational areas. PPL stated it will continue various sustainability programmes focused on environmental conservation and strengthening coastal ecosystem resilience.
