Powerbank Explodes on Makassar-Jakarta Flight, Batik Air Responds

Batik Air has issued a statement regarding a viral video showing a powerbank incident on a flight from Makassar to Jakarta. Corporate Communications Strategic of Batik Air, Danang Mandala Prihantoro, stated that the incident occurred on Wednesday (29/7) on flight ID-6143 from Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. “During the flight, a customer’s powerbank emitted smoke, which was then followed by sparks,” Danang said in a statement on Thursday (30/7). During the incident, cabin crew who have received emergency response training immediately carried out safety procedures according to operational standards. Danang said the handling was carried out quickly and precisely using safety equipment available on the aircraft, so the situation was brought under control and did not escalate further. Throughout the handling process, the cabin crew also ensured the safety of customers near the location. They also continuously coordinated with the flight captain in accordance with flight operational procedures. “The flight then continued and the aircraft landed safely at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, according to operational procedures. All customers and crew were in a safe condition,” Danang said. Batik Air emphasised that regulations regarding the carriage and use of powerbanks during flights have been enforced and communicated to all customers. Powerbanks are not permitted to be used to charge electronic devices during the flight. Furthermore, powerbanks must be carried as cabin baggage and are not allowed in checked baggage, nor should they be stored in overhead compartments. During the flight, powerbanks must remain under the customer’s supervision and can be stored in the seat pocket, a clothing pocket, or a small personal bag placed under the seat in front of the customer. Danang conveyed that these regulations are part of efforts to maintain flight safety and security. “Currently, Batik Air is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident by gathering the necessary data and information. The results of the investigation will serve as the basis for further evaluation in accordance with applicable regulations,” Danang said. “Batik Air appreciates the professionalism of the cabin crew who acted swiftly according to safety procedures so that the incident was handled properly. The safety, security and comfort of customers remain the top priority in every flight operation,” he added.
