Power Outages Hit Riau, North Sumatra, and Aceh Tonight

Power outages have affected several areas in Sumatra, including Riau, North Sumatra, and Aceh. The outages disrupted residents’ activities.

According to detikSumut, power went out in several Pekanbaru districts around 18:50 Western Indonesian Time. All street lighting and home lights went out.

‘The power is out, everything just died,’ said a Pekanbaru resident, Syahnan Rangkuti, on Friday, 22 May 2026.

The outages were not limited to Pekanbaru; areas such as Kampar Regency, Kuantan Singingi, Dumai, Pelalawan, and surrounding areas also experienced outages. Other areas, such as the city of Dumai and surroundings, were affected as well. Internet networks even started to become unstable.

Most of Medan City and Deli Serdang were also in darkness tonight. The outage occurred around 18:50 WIB.

PLN UID North Sumatra Communications Division head Diki Nasution confirmed outages in North Sumatra. He said a widespread disruption occurred due to a fault in Sumatra’s system.

‘There is now a Sumatra system fault,’ said Diki.

Meanwhile, the outage occurred as residents were preparing for Maghrib prayers in Aceh. The lights flickered before power was completely cut.

‘There is now a disruption to electricity supply affecting several areas in Aceh province,’ wrote Lukman Hakim, PLN UID Aceh Communications Manager and TJSL, in a statement.
