Power Outages Across Sumatra Prompt PLN to Deploy Technical Team

Jakarta, Kompas.com – PT PLN (Persero) has commented on power outages that have affected several areas of Sumatra, with a particular impact in North Sumatra. Darma Saputra, Head of Communications for PLN’s North Sumatra Distribution Unit, said the outage began at 18:44 WIB. PLN is currently working to restore supply. “We are currently conducting an inspection into the electrical-system disturbance that occurred in North Sumatra,” he said in an official statement on Friday, 22 May 2026. The team is also tracing the cause of the outage. “We urge the public to remain calm and not panic,” Darma said. One of the questions came from the Twitter/X account @yuuta__ who asked about outages in Medan, Padang, and Pekanbaru. “Medan is without power. People in the WhatsApp group suddenly started messaging that the whole city of Medan, up to Binjai, Brandan, and Langsa were without electricity. What’s happening?” he wrote. “Is it across Sumatra that the power is out? Pekanbaru, Padang are also out,” he added.
