Power cuts disrupt traffic
MEDAN, North Sumatra: Frequent power cuts at the office which
houses the Area Traffic Control System has been disrupting
traffic in the city.
The majority of the traffic lights in Medan are now controlled
by a computer system, said B.S. Parlaungan, the chief of the
Medan Traffic Authority.
Each time there is a blackout, all the traffic lights
connected to the system stop, he explained. He added that his
office had to call up the computer experts to reset the program
each time, Antara reported.
Parlaungan said this was the least of his problems in managing
the city's traffic.
The biggest problem is the complete lack of respect for
traffic regulations by road users. He cited some people closing-
off roads without informing the traffic authorities beforehand as
an example of the disrespect. (emb)
