Poulterer robbed, wife raped in Bekasi

JAKARTA (JP): Police are still trying to determine the identities of the men who allegedly robbed a Bekasi poultry breeding farm manager and then raped his wife in front of their daughter on Tuesday.

City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna told reporters yesterday that two men with possible knowledge of the robbery and brutal rape in the Bantar Gebang subdistrict are still being questioned.

But, Iman told The Jakarta Post, "we have not collected any evidence of their roles in the crime and no one has been detained."

Iman refused to give the identities of the two men being questioned, but said that such crimes are generally committed by neighbors of the victims.

"Police will search the Bantar Gebang neighborhood and will question those we suspect," he said.

More than five men broke into the house of Yanto Subianto, the farm manager, after overwhelming the security guard. The robbers threatened to kill Yanto if he resisted or shouted for help. He was then tied up and locked inside a bathroom.

The men trashed Yanto's private office before stealing 280 grams worth of jewelry and Rp 1 million cash. As the others were about to leave, one of the robbers grabbed Yanto's wife, identified only as Ya, and began raping her in front of her six- year-old daughter.

None of Yanto's employees, who were sleeping in a building in front of his house, heard any commotion until Yanto and his wife shouted for help after the men had run away.

Yanto told the police he did not think he had enemies. However, a poultry breeder, Teguh, said that PT Alvita Pratama, which is developing the Kota Legenda housing complex, had asked Yanto to sell his property, Pos Kota reported yesterday.

The daily also reported that the robbers had broken into the house of a neighbor named Siti.

Siti said that at about 2:00 a.m. the men broke into her house and threatened to kill her and her four children. The robbers left after Siti gave them Rp 15,000. "One of the robbers almost raped my 19-year-old daughter," Siti said, adding that the man gave up after her daughter resisted.

An earlier gang rape case jolted Bekasi last July, when eleven men robbed a local resident, Acan, of money and valuable goods before raping his wife and two daughters in his presence. (bsr/sur)
