Potential Democratic Candidate Rahm Emanuel Warns US-Israel Relationship Unsustainable
Rahm Emanuel, the former Mayor of Chicago and a potential presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, is scheduled to deliver a crucial speech in Tel Aviv on Wednesday (8/7). In his draft speech, Emanuel provides a harsh warning that the relationship between the United States and Israel is at a breaking point and is unsustainable unless the Israeli government immediately changes its policy direction drastically.
According to the draft speech obtained by The Washington Post, Emanuel plans to launch sharp criticism against all parties involved in the protracted conflict in the Middle East. He warns that under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel is at risk of becoming a parley state. Furthermore, he highlights corruption within Palestinian leadership and questions the policy of unconditional support that the United States has historically provided to Israel.
Emanuel, who has a Jewish background and a father born in Jerusalem, will address an audience at Tel Aviv University, stating that the alliance between the two nations cannot continue in its current form. This refers to Israel’s harsh treatment of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
“The United States cannot continue to fund and support such cynicism in silence,” Emanuel’s draft speech quotes. He emphasises that Israel cannot continue to wage war against a world that is beginning to doubt its right to fight, and must immediately find a new path towards peace, security, and economic prosperity.
Emanuel specifically criticises the ambitions of forming a ‘Greater Israel’ which includes the annexation of the West Bank and Gaza. He describes such ambitions as being as self-destructive and fanatic as the Palestinian demands that stretch from the river to the sea.
“Listen to me now: Israel will be alone if its leaders choose to attempt the annexation of the West Bank and pursue the fantasy of Greater Israel,” Emanuel asserts. He states that America will not and cannot be an accomplice in such an endeavour.
The relationship between Emanuel and Netanyahu has long been strained. While serving as White House Chief of Staff during the Obama era, Emanuel once challenged Netanyahu’s settlement policies, which subsequently triggered verbal attacks from Netanyahu’s camp against him.
Emanuel’s move reflects the significant turmoil within the Democratic Party regarding the Israel-Palestine issue. Negative views towards Israel have risen sharply since the invasion of Gaza following the Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023. Party leaders are now caught between traditional supporters of Israel and progressive groups urging an end to military cooperation.
Emanuel stated that his decision to speak directly in Israel is an act of honesty from a friend. “The most important thing a true friend can do is tell the truth, even when it is painful,” he remarked. He also hinted that this journey is part of a non-traditional presidential campaign strategy that he may pursue for 2028.
