Postmaster named as tourism minister

MANILA (AFP): President Fidel Ramos yesterday named Eduardo
Pilapil, the Philippines' postmaster general, as the new
secretary of the Tourism Department, replacing incumbent Vicente
Carlos who has resigned.

Carlos' resignation is effective from July 4, ending a three-
year tenure in the Ramos cabinet, and came at the insistence of
his family so he could resume his law practice, Press Secretary
Hector Villanueva said in a statement.

Pilapil, 54, was a former member of Congress and is the
incumbent chief executive of the Philippine Postal Corp.
