Post-graduates uninterested in civil service

JAKARTA (JP): Few post-graduates are interested in pursuing careers as teachers or civil servants, rector of the University of Indonesia M.K. Tadjudin said on Saturday.

Tadjudin said that post-graduates with a master's or doctoral degree are not interested in government jobs because their initial salaries are generally the same as an undergraduate's.

"Nowadays, more and more people pursue higher learning on their own instead of attaining it while working as government employees," Tadjudin said.

He added that recruiting post-graduates will save the government money because they won't have to pay for their education.

"I propose that post-graduates start at a higher level in the government bureaucracy compared to undergraduates," Tadjudin said during a graduation and recruitment ceremony held at the university's campus in Depok.

The rector also suggested that post-graduates publish their theses and dissertations in academic journals instead of academic texts kept in libraries.

"Publishing in scientific journals may reduce plagiarism," he said.

The University of Indonesia publishes several scientific journals, both in English and Indonesian. (14)
