The Jakarta provincial government anticipates that the number of new migrants following Eid in 2026 will decline compared to previous years. Post-holiday urbanisation is projected to be in the region of 10,000-12,000 people.

Governor Pramono Anung views this decline as reflecting the beginning of more equitable economic growth across various regions. “The number of post-Eid migrants is estimated at around 10,000-12,000 people. This demonstrates increasingly evenly distributed economic development across different regions,” he stated on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

According to Pramono, this trend differs from previous years when Jakarta remained the primary draw for job seekers from other regions. Currently, economic opportunities are beginning to spread across numerous areas, thereby slowing the pace of urbanisation to the capital.

Nevertheless, the Jakarta provincial government is not restricting residents who wish to relocate. The government merely reminds prospective migrants to be adequately prepared, both in terms of skills and economic capability, so as not to add to the city’s social burden.

In recent years, the number of migrants to Jakarta has indeed continued to decline. In 2023, there were 395,298 recorded arrivals. This figure dropped drastically in 2024 to 84,783 people. Meanwhile, for 2025, the number of migrants ranged between 10,000 and 15,000 people.

Pramono conveyed this projection whilst announcing the departure of a free homebound travel programme operated by the provincial government. A total of 33,902 participants were dispatched from the National Monument area in Central Jakarta to various destinations.

The number of programme participants increased by approximately 34 per cent compared to the previous year. The provincial government views this increase as demonstrating strong public demand for safe and affordable homebound transport.

To support this programme, the Jakarta provincial government has prepared 744 bus units with a capacity exceeding 35,000 passengers. Additionally, motorcycle transportation facilities are available to reduce accident risks for travellers who typically use two-wheeled vehicles.

The 2026 Free Homebound Travel Programme serves journeys to 20 cities and districts across six provinces: Lampung, South Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and East Java. Pramono stated that all vehicles have undergone roadworthiness inspections, whilst drivers are required to be in good health and free from drug abuse.
