Post-Disaster, Majority of Connectivity Access in Sumatra is Now Functional
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has assured that the majority of connectivity access in Sumatra affected by the disaster is now functional again, supporting public mobility.
According to data from the Ministry of PU, 107 affected national road segments have been fully restored at 100 per cent, and 43 bridge units are now fully operational.
For local road networks, restoration has been carried out on 2,277 out of a total of 2,421 affected segments, or about 94 per cent.
Meanwhile, 792 out of 1,181 affected bridge units, or about 67 per cent, have also been brought back into function.
By region, connectivity recovery shows positive achievements in several provinces.
In Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, all affected national roads and bridges are now functional again, allowing inter-regional access for the public.
“Connectivity is the lifeline of social and economic activities. In disaster conditions, the most important thing is to ensure access remains open so that emergency response, aid distribution, and public mobility can proceed. The Ministry of PU is present to ensure that connectivity is restored as quickly as possible,” said Dody on Friday (17/4/2026).
To accelerate recovery, the Ministry of PU has also constructed temporary bridges, such as Bailey bridges with spans up to 30 metres and a load capacity of up to 30 tonnes, as well as Armco bridges adapted to field conditions.
As of mid-April 2026, 36 Bailey bridge units have been installed in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
The provision of these temporary bridges serves as a quick solution to maintain public mobility, especially in areas where road access has been cut off due to the disaster, so that logistics distribution and economic activities can resume promptly.
In the medium term, the Ministry of PU is also strengthening rehabilitation and reconstruction through increased funding, particularly in the Road Infrastructure sector, which has risen by Rp 7.61 trillion, from Rp 14.29 trillion to Rp 21.90 trillion.
This budget is focused on handling landslides and repairing national and local road segments.
This handling is part of the ‘build back better’ strategy, which not only restores infrastructure but also enhances resilience to future disasters.
The Ministry of PU continues to coordinate with local governments as well as relevant ministries and agencies in the process of identification, verification, and prioritisation of on-site handling.
The government is optimistic that connectivity recovery in affected areas can be completed soon, supporting sustainable social and economic recovery for the community.
