Post-Disaster Handling in Sumatra Enters Recovery Phase Transition, Emergency Response Period Over
Jakarta, VIVA – Interior Minister (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian, as Chair of the Task Force for Accelerating Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR), has affirmed that the government is entering the recovery phase in accelerating rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts following the disaster in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
This was stated by Tito after a progress meeting on accelerating post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction in Sumatra with the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Pratikno at the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
Tito explained that the emergency response period has been passed, and the affected areas are gradually entering a transitional stage towards recovery. For North Sumatra and West Sumatra, the transition period is nearly complete, while Aceh has been extended slightly before entering full recovery.
“Because now we are actually entering, having passed the emergency, entering the transition [to recovery],” Tito said.
He revealed that a number of basic services in the affected areas have returned to normal operation. The government in Aceh Tamiang Regency, for example, has recovered. In addition, hospital services across all regencies have returned to normal, although some auxiliary health centres in villages are still in the handling process.
Not only that, electricity supply has almost fully recovered, except in areas still isolated due to disrupted road access. To address this, the government is providing generators as a temporary solution. Distribution of fuel oil (BBM) through public fuel filling stations (SPBU), internet networks, national roads, and national bridges have also resumed functioning.
In the education sector, the government through relevant ministries has coordinated with contractors and other parties to accelerate the repair of educational facilities based on priority scales.
“Especially schools that are not yet ideal for the learning process. The learning process is already 100 percent but not yet ideal,” he explained.
Tito also emphasised that budget support is key to accelerating recovery. The central government, he said, has channelled additional transfers to the regions amounting to Rp10.6 trillion to the three affected provinces.
“All have been transferred, it’s complete. February, March, April three times, it’s complete, total Rp10.6 trillion,” he clarified.
