Post-Disaster Education Recovery: MIN 4 Aceh Tamiang Fit for Use Again

The recovery of educational facilities is a crucial part of handling the impact of disasters. In Aceh Tamiang, collaboration between various parties has driven the restoration of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) 4 Aceh Tamiang, which was previously affected by a hydrometeorological disaster. The results of the school renovation were inaugurated on Saturday (8/8/2026) by Human Initiative together with Songs for Sumatra. The repairs were carried out so that students and teachers could resume teaching and learning activities in a safer and more comfortable school environment. Previously, the hydrometeorological disaster damaged a number of school facilities, forcing teaching and learning activities to take place under limited conditions. This situation prompted various parties to work together to support the recovery of educational facilities in the region. The collaboration involved Songs for Sumatra, Human Initiative, the Indonesian diaspora in the United Kingdom, musicians and artists, the Indonesian Embassy in London, the government, the business sector, and the community. Aceh Tamiang Regent Armia Pahmi appreciated the collaboration of various parties in supporting the recovery of MIN 4 Aceh Tamiang. According to him, this support shows that humanitarian values can bring together various parties to help the community rise after a disaster. “This assistance is a sign that humanitarian values are able to unite various parties to bring hope for our community to recover faster and rise stronger,” said Armia. Human Initiative’s Vice President of Organizational Services & Development, Andjar Radite, said that school recovery is not only about repairing buildings, but also about restoring the space children need to continue their education. “Today we are not just re-inaugurating a school. We are witnessing a learning space being restored, teachers once again having a more suitable place to educate, and children regaining a space to learn, grow, and build their aspirations,” said Andjar. During the renovation process, 13 rooms and a number of supporting facilities at MIN 4 Aceh Tamiang were repaired. These facilities include classrooms, a teachers’ room, a headmaster’s office, a library, a prayer room, and toilets. The repairs also covered drainage channels, school fences, gates, and electrical installations. With these improvements, the school environment is expected to optimally support teaching and learning activities once again. Support was not only provided in the form of physical building recovery. Partners also distributed 723 school uniform packages and 713 school kits containing bags and stationery to support students’ learning needs. The collaborative recovery of MIN 4 Aceh Tamiang is part of the Songs for Sumatra movement, which connects the concern of the Indonesian diaspora in the UK, musicians, artists, the Indonesian Embassy in London, and various partners with the needs of communities affected by disasters in Sumatra. The movement then collaborated with Human Initiative to translate this support into a recovery programme tailored to the community’s needs, including the restoration of educational facilities in Aceh Tamiang. The inauguration of MIN 4 Aceh Tamiang is part of the #SumatraPulih spirit to support communities affected by disasters. This cross-party collaboration demonstrates that post-disaster recovery requires not only the rebuilding of infrastructure but also support for the sustainability of community activities, including children’s education.
