Poso protesters detained by police

PALU, Central Sulawesi: The Poso Police detained on Wednesday four protesters for the possession of weapons.

They are being held with 61 others being questioned over an explosion at the Central Sulawesi Police Headquarters.

Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus Sugianto said the four youths, identified only as Sur, 17, Fa, 16, Al, 27, and Sa, 27, were found in possession of homemade pistols, sharp weapons and bullets.

The arrests were made following an explosion at the provincial police headquarters on Tuesday. The blast took place as dozens of Poso refugees were protesting the police's sluggishness in tackling the prolonged communal conflict in their hometown.

Separately, councillors from the Nationalist Muslim faction blasted the police raid on the Poso refugee camp at the National Committee of Indonesian Youth building on Tuesday.

The faction's secretary, Muhammad Zainal Abduh, accused the officers of being uncivilized and bringing disrepute to the police. (28)
