The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA), has stated that the Free Motorcycle Transport (Motis) programme implemented during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming period received a positive response from the public. The service provided convenience for people wishing to return to their hometowns with their two-wheeled vehicles.

Director of Railway Traffic and Transport Arif Anwar explained that the programme would continue to be developed. The development includes expanding coverage, evaluation, and extension of services. This was stated during the ‘LINTAS’ Talkshow and Sharing Session on Homecoming Stories: From Experience to Improvement, held in Jakarta on Thursday (23/4).

“The public’s response to the Motis programme has been very positive and enthusiastic. To improve the quality of the Free Motorcycle (Motis) Programme in the future following the achievements of the 2026 Eid Transport, the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) will take several enhancement steps,” Arif said in a written statement on Friday (24/4/2026).

He explained that there are three main steps Kemenhub will take moving forward: adding stopping stations to broaden the service coverage and increase public accessibility to the Motis programme, especially in areas with high demand potential; conducting a comprehensive evaluation of KA Motis travel times; and extending services to include stations in East Java, as an effort to expand coverage and meet the needs of the public for medium- to long-distance journeys.

There is also a plan to expand the Motis service route across the Jakarta-Surabaya (return) corridor. However, implementation of this route depends on the availability and adequacy of facilities, particularly economy class trains (K3) for passengers and baggage trains (B) for motorcycle transport.

“If the available facilities are deemed sufficient, do not disrupt existing services, and align with Eid transport needs, then the development of this route has the potential to be realised to broaden service coverage and meet public needs,” Arif said.

Meanwhile, for the development of Motis services in Sumatra, Kemenhub will conduct a demand survey for Motis transport services in Sumatra, particularly in southern Sumatra (Lampung and Palembang).

“This also considers various aspects, including infrastructure readiness, facility and infrastructure support, as well as the service scheme to be implemented,” Arif added.

Regarding the ongoing Motis programme, Arif said participants utilised this service as a safer and more comfortable homecoming solution. This is evidenced by the high occupancy of Motis during this year’s Eid transport, with 12,419 motorcycles transported, or 104.4% of the target of 11,900 units, and serving 19,789 passengers successfully transported, with the most popular destinations being Kutoarjo and Lempuyangan.

If in the previous Eid the Motis implementation only served two service routes, namely the northern and central lines, then for the 2026 Eid Transport, the Motis service was increased to three service routes: northern, central, and southern lines with the Jakarta/Pasar Senen-Madiun return route via Kiaracondong.

“In addition, in terms of capacity, there was also an increase in quota compared to Motis 2025, from the previous 7,424 motorcycles with 16,960 passenger tickets facilitated to 11,900 motorcycles with 28,196 passenger tickets for the 2026 Eid Transport Motis implementation,” he concluded.
