Palembang (ANTARA) - The Pos Dempo Volcano Observatory in Pagaralam, South Sumatra, has reminded residents that the eruption status of Mount Dempo is at level II, or alert.

The head of Pos Dempo, Wiwit J, contacted from Palembang on Saturday, stated that the public, visitors, or tourists should not approach or camp at the centre of the Marapi crater activity on Mount Dempo within a 1 km radius, nor in the direction of the crater opening up to 2 km to the north, given that the crater is the epicentre of eruptions and volcanic gases that could endanger lives.

“We urge the public not to be swayed by irresponsible news regarding Mount Dempo’s activity and to follow instructions from the authorised agency, namely the Geological Agency, which will continue to coordinate with BNPB and relevant ministries, local government, and other related institutions,” he said.

Nevertheless, he added that the public should remain calm, as eruptions have frequently occurred since January 2022.

The most recent eruption took place on 15 April 2026 around 11.45 WIB.

Meanwhile, Mount Dempo is indeed a destination for tourists or hikers. The Merapi Dempo Mountain Registration Office (BRIGADE) recorded 7,367 climbers reaching the summit in 2025.

In 2026, climbing Mount Dempo was closed from 15 January to 25 March, or approximately two months, for environmental rejuvenation.

After reopening, four climbers had to be evacuated due to foot injuries, fainting, and hypothermia. However, there were no fatalities.
