Portuguese Woman Arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport for Carrying 50 Rounds of Ammunition

A Portuguese woman, identified by the initials ACRDCFN (47), was detained after being found carrying 50 rounds of ammunition without official documents at the International Departure Terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Badung, Bali, on Saturday (20/6/2026). The case came to light around 11:28 p.m. Central Indonesian Time when Aviation Security (Avsec) officers were screening passenger luggage using an X-ray machine at the Security Check Point (SCP) of the international departures terminal. Officers discovered a suspicious object in the backpack of the passenger, who was scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi. With the owner’s consent, a manual inspection was conducted. “When officers checked one of the bag’s pockets, they found a white tissue bundle containing 50 rounds of .22 Long Rifle ammunition still stored in its box,” explained Ipda I Gede Suka Artana, Head of Public Relations for the Ngurah Rai Airport Police, with the permission of the Airport Police Chief, Commissioner I Komang Budiartha, in a statement on Tuesday (23/6/2026). The ammunition is a type commonly used in .22 calibre firearms, both long-barrelled rifles and pistols. The foreign national did not deny that the ammunition belonged to her. Avsec officers subsequently detained her along with the evidence: 50 rounds of .22 Long Rifle ammunition, a black ammunition box, and the black backpack used to store the items. The woman and the evidence were then taken to the Ngurah Rai Airport Police for further legal proceedings. Based on initial examination, the woman claimed to be an active member of a sport shooting federation in her home country. She explained that the ammunition was likely carried inadvertently, as it had been stored in the bag she normally used for shooting practice in Portugal. However, the foreign national was unable to present any permit or official document issued by the Indonesian government regarding the possession, storage, or transport of ammunition within Indonesian territory. As a result of her actions, the suspect is charged with violating Article 306 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) as stipulated in Law Number 1 of 2023. Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ngurah Rai Airport Police are currently deepening the case by examining witnesses, reviewing CCTV footage, seizing evidence, coordinating with the Portuguese Consulate, and conducting case exposés. The case remains under investigation. Police have urged all international flight passengers to ensure their belongings comply with legal provisions and aviation regulations to maintain collective security and safety.
