Port expansion to start

JAKARTA (JP): Expansion of the Tanjung Emas port in Semarang, Central Java, will cost Rp 93 billion (US$42 million) in physical construction and will start on April 27, an official says.

"The Rp 93 billion is part of this project's total budget of Rp 220 billion, which will be partly financed by the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund of Japan," Gatot Soedjantoko, head of the Central Java chapter of the Ministry of Transportation, was quoted as saying by Antara in Semarang Saturday.

The expansion project is scheduled to be completed by 1997, he said.

The project aims to increase the port's cargo handling capacity to 135,000 twenty-feet equivalent units (TEUs) from 95,000 TEUs at present.

Gatot also said that the project is being carried out by a consortium of domestic construction firms, comprised of PT Zak Nusantara, PT Kali Raya Sakti, PT Yala Perkasa (all three from Jakarta) and PT Teguh Raksa from Tegal, Central Java. (hdj)
