Porn VCD vendors to get religion

JAKARTA: With the police unable to stop the sale of pornographic VCDs in Glodok, the West Jakarta authorities and the Indonesian Ulemas Council are going to use religion to try and get vendors to stop selling the offending movies.

An assistant at the mayoralty's public welfare office, Asfi Syukur, said the VCD vendors would be given sermons on every other Fridays.

The Muslim preachers will call upon the vendors to stop selling the pornographic VCDs, beritajakarta.com reported on Wednesday.

"The sale of pornographic VCDs along Jl. Hayam Wuruk in Kota has brought harm to the people. It has also damaged the morality of the younger generation," he said.

Mayor Sarimun Hadisaputra has complained about the continued sale of the VCDs despite police raids, and decided to use a religious approach to complement the police action. --JP
