My heart sank when I heard about the raids conducted to remove becak (pedicabs) from Jakarta and witnessed the arrogant attitude demonstrated by city officials during these raids.

I would like to appeal to the Jakarta governor to consider the following: 1. While bicycle taxis are increasingly popular among tourists who wish to experience the charm of picturesque towns in Europe, pedicabs could also be used as vehicles for tourists enjoying Jakarta. 2. The city administration could also issue a form of driver's license for pedicab drivers once they pass a course on how to drive a pedicab safely. The city administration could then coordinate with the police so that pedicab drivers could be ticketed if they commit a traffic violation. 3. The city administration could charge a fee for the issuance of a pedicab driver's license. This would mean additional income for the city administration.
