Popularize ban on smoking
Popularize ban on smoking
From Koran Tempo
The governor of Jakarta, Sutiyoso, is of the opinion the
people of Jakarta are not yet ready to accept a ban on smoking at
public places as stipulated in the city administration's bylaw on
the control over air pollution. Aside from creating the necessary
supporting infrastructure for the implementation of this
particular bylaw, efforts to popularize it will also need quite a
long time.
I agree that the city administration must take time to inform
the public of this initiative but the ban on public smoking
should be immediately enforced inside public vehicles. When it
rains, the windows in a bus are shut and some passengers,
ignoring others, continue to smoke often saying that smoking
makes them feel warmer.
This ban should also be enforced in all public places because
smokers are usually selfish. They will throw cigarette butts
anywhere and they smell bad, especially when they talk.
