Pope Leo XIV Reveals Chilling AI Facts, Calls for Global Change

JAKARTA — Pope Leo XIV has finally released his first encyclical, which extensively addresses the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Specifically, he highlights the risks associated with the rapidly advancing and ‘exploding’ use of such sophisticated technology. The document, titled Magnifica Humanitas (Magnificent Humanity), spans nearly 43,000 words and has been in preparation since his election a year ago. Leo XIV warned that AI systems spread misinformation and prioritise conflict, risking the world’s descent into endless war. The encyclical also stresses that AI data ownership should not solely be entrusted to private entities, urging policymakers to enact regulations safeguarding workers’ rights and protecting children from AI-related harm. ‘There is a need for more active political engagement to slow down the pace as everything accelerates,’ Leo stated, quoted from Reuters on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. He also called for robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users, and political systems that do not shirk responsibility. The document further addresses AI use in warfare, urging global adherence to strict ethical boundaries. Leo XIV also stressed that humans must not entrust AI systems with life-or-death decisions. Leo XIV condemned forms of slavery, particularly those within AI systems, such as factory workers producing AI-powered devices like computers and smartphones. ‘These individuals’ bodies are injured, damaged, and worn out to ensure uninterrupted computing flows,’ he explained. ‘This reality challenges the moral conscience of our age,’ he added. Leo urged not to give up on addressing AI risks, stating everyone has a responsibility to act. ‘No one is without responsibility. We all have our own spheres of action,’ he said.
