Pope Leo called for compassion towards the poor, the oppressed, and the vulnerable while leading an open mass attended by approximately 1.2 million people in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday. The Eucharistic celebration was one of the major events during the Pope’s week-long visit to the country.

Hundreds of thousands of worshippers lined the streets from Paseo del Prado to Plaza de Cibeles, waving flags and cheering as the leader of the global Catholic Church passed by. In his homily, Pope Leo urged Catholics to manifest their faith through concrete actions by helping those in need.

“God sides with the poor, those who are oppressed, those who are alone and abandoned,” said Pope Leo.

The Pope also emphasised the importance of humanitarian values in social life. Previously, upon receiving the keys to the City of Madrid from the local mayor, he expressed his hope that the Spanish capital would remain an open and inclusive city.

“I hope Madrid remains a friendly and inclusive city, where social life is inspired by true human values,” he stated.

Pope Leo’s visit to Spain began on Saturday, meeting with immigrants and the homeless. He also attended a prayer vigil with approximately 600,000 young people in Madrid. During his visit, which continues until 12 June, the Pope is scheduled to visit Barcelona and the Canary Islands, where he will meet migrants who have undertaken dangerous journeys from West Africa to reach Europe.

The Pope expressed his hope that this visit would serve as an example to the world regarding the importance of respecting every human being regardless of their background. He also reminded political leaders not to divide society for specific interests.
