Poor street lighting causes fear

TANGERANG: Residents of Benda village in Tangerang have complained about the absence of street illumination, which makes the area prone to crimes and traffic accidents at night.

"As soon as the sun sets, it is dark and we do not dare go out," Somadri, one of the locals told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

He said that traffic accidents and crimes frequently occurred along the main road that connects the Juru Mudi subdistrict with Kalideres and the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

The main road is narrow, and there is street lighting at all, he added.

The district secretary, Achmad Fuad, confirmed that there were many accidents and crimes occurring along the road.

He said district officials had repeatedly requested the municipal office to repair the broken street lightning and to supply street lamps. "The last request we submitted to the agency office was last month but there has been no response," he said. -- JP
