JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Police’s Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) formally launched the Digital Driving Licence (SIM Digital). The launch coincided with the Technical Working Meeting (Rakernis) of Korlantas Polri at the STIK Polri Complex, Jakarta, on Friday, 22 May 2026. The Director of Regident at Korlantas Polri, Brigadier General Pol Wibowo, said that the digitisation of the SIM is part of a nationwide technology-based transformation of public services. ‘Through the Digital Korlantas Polri application, the public can store and display their driving licence in digital form. The data available includes the owner’s identity, the SIM number, the validity period, and a QR code for verification by officers in the field,’ Wibowo said in a statement on Friday. In implementation, motorists undergoing traffic checks will no longer need to show a physical driving licence. Verification of validity will be carried out by officers via a central Korlantas system using the driver’s digital SIM on their mobile phones. Meanwhile, the physical SIM card as a document only needs to be kept at home. ‘In the future, the legality of the SIM will rely on data on the server, not solely on the physical card. This will improve efficiency, accelerate the checking process, and minimise the potential for counterfeiting,’ he said. The digital system will also be integrated with other services, such as online SIM renewals, expiry notifications, and integration with the electronic ticketing system (ETLE). ‘At the initial stage, we still urge the public to carry the physical SIM as a backup, while awaiting full readiness of the system across all regions,’ said Wibowo.
