Polri-UN Collaboration: Strengthening Security for Global Peacekeeping Personnel
The Indonesian National Police (Polri), through its Deputy Chief, Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo, has emphasised its commitment to strengthening sustainable cooperation with the United Nations (UN) to support global peacekeeping missions, with a primary emphasis on guaranteeing the security and safety of personnel serving in conflict areas.
This commitment was conveyed during a meeting with a delegation from the United Nations Police Division, led by United Nations Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar, accompanied by Hai Nguyen and Mehmet Ata Yenigun, held in the Banquet Room at Polri Headquarters in Jakarta.
During the meeting, Faisal Shahkar expressed appreciation for Polri’s contributions.
“We thank Polri for the support it has provided. We will continue to develop and strengthen this cooperation to enhance our joint contributions to global peacekeeping missions,” he stated in an official release on Monday (20/4).
Shahkar also noted that, based on observations in various missions, Polri personnel have demonstrated professionalism, discipline, and good adaptability in meeting UN operational standards.
The presence of the UN delegation represents a tangible continuation of the close relationship that has been established. This third visit serves as strong evidence of the solid and ongoing strategic partnership between Polri and the UN, while also reinforcing their shared commitment to supporting the maintenance of world peace.
Polri’s cooperation with the United Nations Department of Peace Operations continues to be strengthened since the signing of the Cooperation Action Points on 26 June 2024 in New York, United States, as part of implementing Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to maintain world order.
As part of capacity building, Polri is currently hosting the Annual FPU Commanders Workshop (20-24 April 2026) and will conduct the Annual Commanders Strategic Course in July, as systematic efforts to enhance the professionalism and readiness of personnel for international missions.
In its field contributions, Polri is currently deploying:
140 Formed Police Unit (FPU) personnel in the MINUSCA mission in the Central African Republic.
51 Individual Police Officer (IPO) personnel spread across five missions, namely:
14 personnel in MINUSCA (Central Africa);
19 personnel in UNMISS (South Sudan);
9 personnel in MONUSCO (Democratic Republic of Congo);
6 personnel in UNFICYP (Cyprus);
3 personnel in UNISFA (Abyei).
The Deputy Chief expressed appreciation for the ongoing trust given to Polri in supporting various international missions.
“We thank you for the trust provided, enabling Polri to continue actively contributing to global peacekeeping missions, both through the deployment of personnel and the enhancement of human resource capacity,” stated the Deputy Chief.
Furthermore, the Deputy Chief emphasised that personnel safety is an absolute priority in every assignment.
“We will continue to emphasise security and safety aspects for all personnel serving in mission areas, as well as strengthen coordination and cooperation with the UN to ensure the effectiveness of task implementation in the field,” he said.
“Personnel safety is the top priority. We hope that through increasingly close and sustainable cooperation, there will be no more casualties among global peacekeepers,” the Deputy Chief added.
In line with this, Polri is also continuously improving operational readiness through preparations for FPU Level 3 to address increasingly complex modern conflicts.
This meeting reaffirms that Polri-UN cooperation will continue to be strengthened sustainably, with a primary focus on protection, security, and safety of personnel as the foundation for the success of global peacekeeping missions.
