Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Commission for Accelerating Police Reform (KPRP) recommends that the Inspectorate of General Supervision (Itwasum) of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) become the frontline in internal oversight within the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia.

Retired Police General Ahmad Dofiri, a member of KPRP, stated during a press conference in South Jakarta on Wednesday that there are three internal oversight functions in Polri: Itwasum Polri, the Professional and Security Division (Propam) Polri, and the Investigation Supervision Bureau (Wassidik) of the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) Polri.

“So far, oversight has been running independently. Itwasum supervises on its own, Propam on its own, Wassidik on its own,” he said.

He explained that Itwasum is tasked with overseeing institutional aspects, such as human resources, budget, logistics, and operations. Meanwhile, the Propam Division focuses on supervising personnel ethics, while the Wassidik Bureau handles oversight in law enforcement processes.

He gave an example that in the future, every complaint or request for case review cannot be directly handled by a specific unit without coordination and approval from Itwasum.

Thus, the entire oversight process can run more structured and accountable.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto received the final report and recommendations from KPRP, submitted by KPRP Chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5).

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, as well as KPRP member Yusril Ihza Mahendra, conveyed that the compiled recommendations are substantive and have the potential to drive major changes, including the possibility of revising the Police Law.

He emphasised that various recommendations are expected to strengthen the oversight system and improve the accountability and professionalism of Polri.
