Polri Law Revision Becomes a DPR-Initiated Bill
During the DPR plenary session in Jakarta on Wednesday, the question was whether the bill proposed by Commission III of the DPR concerning amendments to Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian National Police could be approved as a DPR-initiated bill. Members present nodded in agreement, and Saan then struck the gavel to formalise the approval.
This revision is the consequence of follow-up work by the Police Reform Acceleration Commission (KPRP). Police Chief General Listyo Sigit said the follow-up would yield a number of regulations, both revising existing rules and formulating new ones. Within the internal Polri there will also be improvements to the regulations for the Police Chief or Perkap and Polri regulations (Perpol). “Revision of the law is necessary, and there are internal measures that we will improve,” he said during an appearance at the Police Headquarters in South Jakarta on Thursday, 7 May 2026.
In addition to internal Polri rules, the revision or creation of new regulations may also take the form of government regulations if the recommendations relate to other ministries or agencies. Sigit hopes the follow-up regulations stemming from KPRP recommendations can address the public’s desires for reform within the Polri. “I think this is part of our duty to continue improvement and evaluation of the institution,” he said.
According to Sigit, the institution is open and flexible to all recommendations provided by KPRP. He cited the strengthening of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) as an example, and assessed that strengthening that external oversight body is part of policing reform from an external oversight perspective.
