Polri says the evaluation of officers’ use of firearms is carried out periodically as part of an internal oversight mechanism, said Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, spokesman for the Public Information and Communications Division (Karo Penmas) of Polri, in response to the case of 18-year-old Bertrand Eko Prasetyo who was allegedly shot while being apprehended by police in Makassar.

“The evaluation process is ongoing at all times. In every step of operational activities and in policing of officers, there is something called analysis and evaluation,” said Trunoyudo at the Polri’s Bareskrim building, Jakarta, on Thursday 5 March 2026.

He explained that before activities take place, the Police first analyse the programme to be undertaken and evaluate preceding activities. Evaluations are also conducted while activities are underway, through to the post-implementation stage.

“Before, during the planning process, analysing and evaluating the programme activities previously, and then during implementation, up to post-activity,” he added.

Therefore, according to him, evaluation is an important part to ensure all police activities are carried out in accordance with procedures.

“There is a management oversight function, as well as one that acts as the technical supervisor, and also in administrative matters,” Trunoyudo said.

It is known that the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the South Sulawesi Regional Police has named an officer with the initials Iptu N as a suspect in Bertrand Eko Prasetyo’s death.

Makassar Police Chief Commissioner Arya Perdana said the designation of the suspect followed investigations and inquiries into alleged general criminal acts in the incident.

“The person in question, Iptu N, has been named a suspect,” Arya said on the evening of Wednesday (4 March 2026).

The incident occurred on Jalan Toddopuli Raya, Panakkukang District, Makassar, on Sunday (1 March 2026) at around 07:00 WITA.

Iptu N subsequently went to the scene to disperse the action and secure the victim.

However, during the security operation, the firearm held by Iptu N reportedly discharged and struck the victim’s body.

“When the victim wriggled, the pistol still in Iptu N’s hand discharged accidentally and hit the back part of the body,” Arya said.
