Poll: Majority of Americans Say War Against Iran Has Failed

The majority of Americans believe the months-long war between the United States and Iran has failed to achieve its goals, according to a recent poll, which views the conflict as an unsustainable war of attrition. A Marquette Law School Supreme Court survey conducted in late July found that 88% of respondents said the US had not achieved its aims, compared to just 12% who considered the war a success. Furthermore, 75% of those surveyed felt the war was not worth the cost, while 25% believed the effort was justified. Throughout the war, now in its fifth month, President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that his primary objective is to ensure Tehran never acquires nuclear weapons. However, the Trump administration has provided status updates that critics describe as contradictory regarding Iran’s military capabilities and the state of its nuclear programme. Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth have claimed that Iran’s nuclear capability has been diminished and its military devastated since the start of the war. Yet, amid these claims, Iran has continued to launch deadly attacks on US forces and persistently strike vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. A failed memorandum of understanding also included terms for Tehran and Washington to remove nuclear material from Iran, even though Trump had previously touted the success of Operation Midnight Hammer in ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The conflict has had a direct impact on the cost of living for American citizens. A major side effect of the war has been the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route through which 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. The strait’s closure has triggered domestic price hikes and shaken the global economy. On Tuesday, Trump stated that Iran and Oman were nearing a resolution regarding the strait, adding that the waterway would be opened soon, ‘Or they will be hit very hard and then the strait will open.’ Secretary Hegseth presented the financial details of the conflict to the Senate Appropriations Committee last month alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine. The significant financial burden and the uncertain outcome of the war are proving to be a major obstacle for the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The GOP is currently struggling to maintain its slim majority in the House and retain control of the Senate amid widespread public dissatisfaction with the direction of the Middle Eastern conflict.
