Poll: Majority of Americans Oppose Trump's Military Action Against Iran

PBS News/NPR/Marist released a poll on Friday (6 March) showing that a majority of Americans do not approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of the confrontation with Iran, as the escalation of military action continues. As the first weekend of US military operations against Iran begins, the survey recorded 56% of Americans opposing the action, with 44% in support. The results highlight a strong political polarization in the United States regarding the president’s foreign policy.

Party lines were sharply drawn: Republicans - a large majority - back the president’s approach. 79% of Republican respondents approved of the president’s approach, and 84% supported the military strike.

Democrats were the opposite: 86% of Democratic supporters opposed the president’s approach and rejected the military action. Independents: around six in ten indicated disagreement with Trump’s handling and opposed the operation in Iran.

The release of the poll coincides with tensions on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers are currently divided in their stance on the strike. Democrats have harshly condemned the move, arguing there is no credible immediate threat from Tehran and questioning the constitutional legitimacy, arguing the strike lacks official authorization from Congress.
