Politics of the Week: Try Sutrisno Dies and National Silaturahmi at the Presidential Palace
Jakarta (ANTARA) – A number of political events reported by ANTARA News Agency over the past week. Here are some selected stories that remain of interest to read this morning.
- The 6th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Try Sutrisno, died at the Army Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto, Jakarta, on Monday morning around 07.00 WIB.
Information about Try Sutrisno’s death was conveyed via chain messages sent on behalf of the family and the Badan Pembinaan Ideologi Pancasila (BPIP), and was confirmed by several officials at the Secretariat of State and the Presidential Security Force (Paspampres).
- Prabowo Subianto telephones Gulf leaders amid the Iran–Israel conflict.
Foreign Minister Sugiono revealed that President Prabowo Subianto has conducted direct telephone communications with several leaders in the Gulf region following the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. In his statement via an audio recording in Jakarta on Wednesday, Sugiono said that almost all important telephone calls had been made by the President, amid the escalating armed conflict between Iran and Israel.
- Escalation in the Gulf: kyai and ulama back Prabowo’s policies to safeguard NKRI.
A number of kyai and ulama expressed their support for the policies taken by President Prabowo Subianto, including those related to the escalation in Gulf countries and the Middle East, because the primary aim is to preserve the integrity of the Unit ed Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
Some leaders of pesantren, senior figures of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and leaders of Muslim community organisations (ormas) voiced their support at a joint press conference at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday evening after the gathering of kyai, ulama and Muslim scholars at the Palace.
- The Commander orders Kostrad leadership to prepare for global conflict.
The Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), General Agus Subiyanto, instructed the personnel of the Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) to prepare themselves for a global conflict that is heating up. He said all preparations must be undertaken to protect the country from the impact of international conflicts whose escalation is increasing.
- National Silaturahmi at the Istana: Prabowo seated between Jokowi and SBY.
President Prabowo Subianto led the agenda of the Silaturahmi and National Discussions on the Nation event, attended by a number of former Indonesian Presidents, national figures and members of the Merah Putih Cabinet at Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, on Tuesday evening. President Prabowo sat in the centre of the main table, flanked by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to his right and former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) to his left.
