Political scholars to open seminar

JAKARTA: Scholars from the Indonesian Society of Political Science will open a national three-day seminar on leadership and civil society in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara.

The seminar will discuss 28 papers, including three key-note papers to be presented by Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto, State Minister for Public Housing Akbar Tanjung and East Nusa Tenggara governor Herman Musakabe.

The seminar will also feature prominent intellectuals and politicians such as Mochtar Pabottingi, Riswanda Imawan, Kwik Kian Gie, Heru U. Kuntjara-Jakti and Frans Seda, the seminar committee said yesterday.

Participants will examine whether the public's improving political awareness is in the process of becoming a civil society characterized by a strong drive to independence, freedom of expression and greater political participation, or whether it will create anarchy, as indicated by recent incidents of social violence.
