Political Parties Respond to Jokowi's Regional Safari Tour
Former president Joko Widodo commenced his political safari on 26 June 2026 in Lampung. Donning a jacket and cap bearing the logo of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Jokowi spent three days touring the region at the eastern tip of Sumatra. Jokowi claimed his political tour in Lampung was based on an invitation from the community. There, the father of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka also received an honorary customary title, Baginda Pemuka Bangsa. Jokowi explained that the reason for choosing Lampung as the first province to visit was a form of appreciation because PSI Lampung had almost completed 100 per cent of its party structure down to the village level. According to Jokowi, PSI structures in other regions are still around 40-60 per cent. ‘I want to give my highest appreciation, respect and honour to the General Chair, the Regional Executive Board Chair, the Branch Executive Board Chair and all their staff who have completed the party structure down to the village level,’ he said in Lampung on Friday, 26 June 2026. After completing the party structure in the villages, Jokowi advised the PSI Mesuji Regional Leadership Council to work and bring the party to life. The way to do this is by maintaining closeness with the community in daily activities and helping to solve problems. Jokowi believes PSI can win the 2029 General Election if regional structures work optimally from now on. He encouraged PSI cadres and administrators to fight for victory in the upcoming election. Besides Lampung, Jokowi will also conduct a political safari to East Nusa Tenggara and West Java. A number of political party elites responded to the tour by the former PDI Perjuangan cadre. National Awakening Party (PKB) politician Lalu Hadrian Irfani assessed Jokowi’s visit to the regions as a personal right of a citizen. He said what the former president did was normal. ‘The important thing is that it does not cross the line, does not jump the gun,’ he said when met at the DPR complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. He said Indonesia is a diverse country, including regarding the interests of each national figure. Therefore, he believes there needs to be mutual respect and appreciation for these different interests. ‘But today we are assigned by PKB, of course, under one command to the General Chair Gus Muhaimin Iskandar,’ said Lalu. PDIP DPP Chair Puan Maharani responded to the political safari recently conducted by Jokowi. According to her, it is the right of every citizen to visit the regions. However, Puan said the activities of her former party cadre did not affect stability. Because, she said, the current global situation is uncertain. ‘It would be better if we could all work together to keep the situation conducive,’ Puan said at the DPR complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Golkar Party Secretary General Muhammad Sarmuji said Jokowi, who has retired as president, also has the right to conduct a political tour. ‘Mr Jokowi is a free man, he can decide his political decisions as he wishes. It depends on him and the Indonesian Solidarity Party,’ he said at the DPR complex, Jakarta, on Monday, 29 June 2026. In addition, he stated that the party is not worried about the political safari being conducted by Jokowi with PSI. According to him, the potential for voter migration is always open as long as the general election has not yet begun. He assessed that every political party has its own appeal to attract voters in the general election contest. ‘Voter migration is not only to PSI, it could be to other parties including Golkar,’ said Sarmuji.
