Former President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has reportedly asked the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) to safeguard the administration of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, even for two terms. The request was conveyed by PSI DPP Chair Bestari Barus after meeting Jokowi in Solo on Thursday morning (18/6). “He told us to safeguard Mr Prabowo and Gibran, even for two periods. So there is no slander about two suns,” Bestari said. The statement has prompted responses from various political parties.

NasDem Party Treasurer Ahmad Sahroni stated his party is currently focused on supporting the Prabowo administration. “Safeguarding Mr Prabowo is mandatory until the government’s work is complete,” he said, adding that NasDem has not yet discussed the 2029 presidential election and will follow the direction of Chairman Surya Paloh.

Demokrat Party Secretary General Herman Khaeron said his party has also not discussed the 2029 election, especially since the election law has not been reviewed. He considered Jokowi’s statement as his right, but stressed that Demokrat is focused on ensuring the success of Prabowo’s programmes, including the main Asta Cita agenda, amid global uncertainty.

PKS DPP Chair Mardani Ali Sera viewed Jokowi’s request for two terms as reasonable to ensure continuity and stability. However, he noted that the decision to run for a second term ultimately rests with President Prabowo, including the choice of his running mate.

Golkar Party Deputy Chair Ahmad Doli Kurnia said the message from Jokowi was a firm rebuttal to narratives attempting to drive a wedge between Jokowi and Prabowo, often referred to as the ‘two suns’ issue. He emphasised that Prabowo is the sole head of state and government. Doli added that Golkar is committed to supporting the Prabowo-Gibran administration and has decided in its national leadership meeting to back Prabowo for a second term, while leaving the choice of vice-presidential candidate entirely to Prabowo.
