Political Parties Gear Up for the 2029 Elections

Several political parties are beginning to position themselves ahead of the 2029 General Elections. Although the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration has not yet reached its second year, some party leaders are openly stating their victory targets for the 2029 elections. Based on the General Elections Commission’s recapitulation of the 2024 elections, the Democrat Party obtained 11,283,160 votes (7.43%). In addition to targeting national vote gains, the Democrat Party is also aiming to increase its legislative seats in the 2029 elections. The party, symbolised by the mercy star, seeks to repeat the sweet record of the 2009 elections, when it secured 21,703,137 votes or 148 seats in the DPR. “The target must increase, both in votes and seats. The figures will be formulated in regional working meetings after the new leadership is formed,” said Herman in his speech at the V Regional Conference of the Democrat Party of South Sumatra Province at the Aryaduta Hotel in Palembang on Saturday (2/5/2026). To that end, Herman emphasised the importance of maintaining unity, loyalty, and solidarity within the party as the key to achieving victory in the upcoming political contestation. At the same event, AHY stressed the importance of consolidation. According to him, party consolidation is a fundamental strategic step that is not only overseen during the regional conference but at all times. “The organisation will be healthy, ready, and capable of achieving success if it is solid, if there is effective leadership, and party management that can create a family atmosphere yet remains professional and ready to compete well,” said AHY. Previously, AHY had also directly conveyed his party’s targets for the 2029 elections in front of Gerindra Party Secretary-General Sugiono. That moment occurred at an iftar gathering at the Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday (4/3/2026). “Mr Foreign Minister Sugiono (who is also Gerindra’s Secretary-General), hopefully in 2029 the votes will be louder here, sir. Although Gerindra will certainly be very strong, but don’t let the Democrat Party’s votes not be too strong in 2029,” AHY said at the time.
