Political maturity
toward election

From Suara Karya

The approaching 2004 general election is a step forward and at
the same time a challenge to the nation.

With 24 political parties planning to contest the election, it
is our hope that the event will not be hampered by any incidents,
such as the falsification of votes, money politics and clashes
between party supporters.

The clash between supporters of the Indonesian Democratic
Party of Struggle and the Golkar Party in Bali that left three
Golkar supporters dead some time ago should serve as a lesson. It
indicates the nation's lack of political knowledge and education.

Differences are natural in a political system, requiring
mutual appreciation and respect. This involves a process of
political maturity, which is a major challenge the nation has yet
to face.

With such maturity, the election will proceed democratically
and smoothly without any impediments, and it will result in true
representatives and leaders ready to serve the public's
interests.
