Policemen arrested for extortion

MEDAN, North Sumatra: The North Sumatra Police have arrested three police intelligence officers in Medan for allegedly extorting money from a Singaporean businessman.

"The three are liable to dismissal from the police force if they are proven guilty of extorting money from the foreign citizen," North Sumatra Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Amrin Karim said here on Friday.

He said the victim, identified as Wilindri, had reported to the provincial police headquarters that the three policemen had threatened him with arrest if he did not give them Rp 5 million.

The police have also questioned two employees of a bank in Medan on charges of bribing the three intelligence officers in order not to arrest the Singaporean. --Antara
