Policeman hit by drunken driver

JAKARTA (JP): An on-duty police sergeant suffered injuries when he was hit by a speeding car on Jl. Kelapa Gading Boulevard, East Jakarta, early Sunday morning. The car was driven by a South Korean businessman who was allegedly intoxicated, had no lights on and no driving documents.

North Jakarta police precinct head Lt. Col. Edi Darnadi told The Jakarta Post on Monday that the wounded police officer, identified as First Sergeant Nosim, along with his colleagues, was under assignment for checking documents of all vehicles and drivers passing through Jl. Kelapa Gading Boulevard.

While his friends were checking the documents of a driver at the side of the road, a speeding Kijang minivan, driven by the South Korean, hit Nosim from behind.

Doctors said that Nosim's rib was broken, Edi said. (bsr)
