Policeman busted for drug trafficking

JAKARTA: A low-ranking policeman of North Jakarta Police precinct was arrested on Tuesday night by police detectives for alleged drug trafficking.

Comr. Guntur, head of the drug section at Jakarta Police detectives, confirmed on Wednesday that the policeman, known only as Brig. Rah, was arrested at 8 p.m. at a discotheque in Pluit, North Jakarta.

Police found around 100 ecstasy pills in his pocket.

"He is now being interrogated by internal affairs," said Guntur, adding that the arrest was possible by a tip-off.

Last year, 98 policemen were implicated in drug-related cases nationwide. For the first three months this year, 12 policemen were linked to drug cases across the country. No figures are immediately available on the drug cases implicating police in the city. -- JP

Police arrest marijuana dealer

BEKASI: Bekasi Police arrested on Tuesday evening a suspected marijuana dealer at his home on Kampung Jati, Margahayu subdistrict, East Bekasi, and confiscated 48 packets of the drug as evidence.

Police narcotics chief Adj. Comr. Rasino said on Wednesday that the arrest of Zainudin, 30, was made following a tipoff from a member of the public.

The suspect offered marijuana to plain-clothes police, who negotiated a price of Rp 40,000 (US$4.70) for a medium-sized package and Rp 30,000 for each of the small packages, he said.

The suspect was arrested with a total of 48 packages of small and medium-sized packages wrapped in newspaper.

The suspect admitted to police that he got the marijuana from a man who lives in Bekasi -- whose name he does not know -- for Rp 30,000 for one medium package and Rp 20,000 for one small package.

The suspect has been detained for investigation, as police suspect a network with drug dealers from outer Bekasi. -- Antara
