Police Warn Against Obstructing Cipete Cafe Raid Linked to Major Corruption Probes
The Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortas Tipikor) of the National Police and the Metro Jaya Regional Police are currently investigating three corruption cases concerning coal for the state electricity company PLN, the state insurers ASABRI and Jiwasraya, and the debt settlement of Krakatau Steel (KS). The police have reminded that any parties attempting to obstruct the investigation into these three cases will face legal proceedings.
‘We need to convey to all of you, we urge all parties to respect the process being carried out by the police. We are informing anyone who tries to obstruct the investigation process that they can be processed under Article 21 of the Corruption Crime Act,’ said Metro Jaya Police Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, during a search at a cafe in Cipete, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (8/7/2026).
Budi stated that the entire investigation process is being conducted professionally. He added that Kortas Tipikor and the Metro Jaya Police can account for the entire legal process of the three cases. ‘The Metro Jaya Police and the National Police Headquarters continue to adhere to the principles of professionalism, proportionality, and accountability, and all these police actions can be accounted for,’ Budi said.
The deployment of armed personnel during the search, according to Budi, was in accordance with police procedure. There are eight search locations related to the three corruption cases. ‘The use of personnel force is for anticipation and is part of the standard operating procedure (SOP) carried out by the police,’ Budi stated.
‘We conveyed earlier, and I repeat, there are three objects related to the PLN coal blackout, the alleged case at ASABRI, and Krakatau Steel. Thus, from the investigation and inquiry process, it led to the eight points where the searches were carried out. The search is to find and discover evidence to fulfil the criminal acts being alleged,’ he stressed.
The Head of Kortas Tipikor Polri, Inspector General Totok Suharyanto, mentioned that this case is being handled jointly with the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Metro Jaya Police. The cases relate to alleged corruption in coal procurement that triggered a blackout, the ASABRI case, and the debt settlement process from PT CBS to PT KNI, a subsidiary of Krakatau Steel.
‘Currently, Kortas Polri is carrying out a joint investigation scheme with the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Metro Jaya Police in handling corruption and money laundering cases in the legal handling process of the PLN coal case, then the Asabri case from 2020 to 2025, and the alleged corruption case in the debt settlement process of PT CBS to PT KNI from 2020 to 2025,’ he said.
The Director of Special Criminal Investigation for Metro Jaya Police, Senior Commissioner Victor Dean Mackbon, then provided an explanation regarding the two case objects. The search relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in the legal handling process by state officials or civil servants in the ASABRI and Jiwasraya cases. ‘First, the alleged criminal act of corruption and or money laundering in the legal handling process by state officials or civil servants in the PT ASABRI (Persero) and or Asuransi Jiwasraya case that occurred within the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police from 2020 to 2025,’ he said. The second case relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in a debt settlement process. The suspects in these cases have not yet been disclosed.
