Police Visit Sumba Labourers in Klungkung to Ease Tensions After Assault
Police in Klungkung have moved to defuse potential conflict following an assault incident by visiting labourers from Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, who reside in the onion warehouse area on Jalan Jepun, Semarapura Klod.
Klungkung Police Head of Samapta, AKP I Gusti Lanang, stated the preventive measure was taken to ensure the security and public order situation in the Serombotan area remains conducive. “We came to urge all workers to maintain brotherhood, respect one another, and not be easily provoked by emotions following the alleged assault incident involving residents from Sumba,” Lanang said.
Lanang emphasised that the police presence among the workers from eastern Indonesia was intended to provide a sense of security while also gathering information directly. At the same time, police asked the newcomers not to be easily provoked by unverified issues.
He specifically requested that residents from NTT who come to Bali be able to adapt to their surroundings. “Wherever you set foot, uphold the local customs. That means wherever you are, you should adapt to the habits of the local community. If you are in Bali, then adjust to the customs of the Balinese people,” he advised, which was met with nods from the residents.
At the same location, Klungkung Police Chief Kompol I Gusti Ngurah Yudistira reminded the workers to prioritise legal channels or deliberation when facing problems, rather than taking the law into their own hands. According to him, synergy between the migrant community and the police is key to maintaining security stability.
“We hope that all members of the community, including workers, can jointly maintain environmental security and immediately coordinate with the police if there is any potential for public order disturbance,” Yudistira said.
Previously, a casual labourer from Klungkung, I Kadek Indrawan (37), was the victim of a mob attack by a group of intoxicated individuals allegedly from Sumba, NTT.
