Police Use Social Media as New Channel for Reporting Street Crime
Jakarta — Police are turning to social media as a new channel for reporting street crime. Iman Imanuddin, Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Metro Jaya Regional Police (Ditreskrimum Polda Metro Jaya), said reports can now be received through posts by netizens who tag the official accounts of the Metro Jaya Police. ‘For social media enthusiasts, they have long provided information to us, whether it is uploaded on the relevant social media accounts and then tagged to the accounts we own — namely the Ditreskrimum Polda Metro Jaya account and the Sikat Man account,’ Iman said at a press conference at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. In addition to reporting via social media, Iman also deployed the Begal Hunter Team across the Metro Jaya Police jurisdiction, which patrols 24 hours a day. ‘In its implementation, we remain guided by respect for human rights. We emphasise this because we also have rules that we must adhere to in carrying out our duties in the field,’ Iman said.
