Police urged to curb motorcycle mudik as ban remains unfeasible
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Chairman of the DPR’s Commission V Syaiful Huda has urged the police to limit the number of people who will go home for Lebaran 2026 using motorcycles.
Based on mudik records from 2022-2025, the motorbike accident rate is notably high at 75.9 percent.
‘I note that from 2022 to 2025 there has been a very high rate where the mudik accident rate of 75.9 percent concerns accidents experienced by mudik travellers riding motorbikes. So this figure is very high,’ Huda said at the DPR Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (5/3/2026).
Huda emphasised that the potential for accidents among motorbike riders can be reduced. The way, he said, is to provide motorbike mudik travellers with free mudik transport.
‘But at least for motorbike users who have been taking their wives and children mudik using motorbikes. I hope this can be restricted as much as possible, as far as the government can, converted to be provided, facilitated using transport, a mode of transport, free mudik,’ he explained.
He also noted that many young people aged 17-25 are often victims of accidents due to mudik by motorcycle.
‘That figure is 28.54 percent. So, the group includes young people, and we must not gamble away the future of our young people with accidents, because we are not maximising ensuring they are protected from accidents when using motorcycles. Because banning is not yet possible, but this needs serious attention from the government,’ he added.
